Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that develops in the lining of lungs, heart or abdomen. It affects the tissues of the lungs, heart or abdomen. Caused by inhalation of asbestos fibers.
Causes of Mesothelioma Cancer
Exposure to asbestos is the main cause of mesothelioma cancer whereas there are many risk factors for the same.
Mesothelioma develops when a person ingests or inhale asbestos, it affects the person’s DNA.
DNA is a part of our gene, which controls cells growth, multiplication, and death. Changes in the DNA or genes may cause the cell to divide out of control and may lead to cancer.

A Person ingests asbestos fiber.
Asbestos fibers lodges in the lining of lungs, heart or abdomen.
Lodged asbestos fibers damage the mesothelial cells of the heart, lungs or abdomen and cause the inflammations.
Over a period of time, tumors begin to form damages mesothelium.
Tumors can be cancerous or noncancerous. When it is cancerous Drs. called Mesothelioma Cancer.
Symptoms of Mesothelioma Cancer
Symptoms may take 10 to 15 years to emerge after the exposure of asbestos fibers. Mesothelioma malignant symptoms vary based on types of mesothelioma cancer, stage of cancer and other factors.
Knowing and recognizing the symptoms is very important for early detection and prognosis.
Pleural Mesothelioma – It affects the lining or tissues of lungs, signs, and symptoms may include :
- Chest Pain
- Lower back pain
- Dyspnea ( Shortness of Breath)
- Painful Coughing
- Weight Loss
- Fluid build around lungs
Peritoneal Mesothelioma – It occurs in the lining or tissue of the abdomen. Signs and symptoms may include:
- Abdominal Pain
- Abdominal swelling
- Loss of appetite
- Unexpected weight loss
- Fluid build up
Pericardial Mesothelioma – It occurs in the lining of hear and affects the tissues around the heart. Signs and symptoms may include
- Irregular heartbeat
- Shortness of Breath
- Chest pain
Testicular Mesothelioma – Signs and Symptoms may include :
- Pain in testis or groin
- Excess fluid in the scrotum
- Lumps or mass in the testicles
Factors Impacting Mesothelioma Symptoms
Apart from types, there are other factors which impact the number and degree of Mesothelioma symptoms.
Types of Asbestos – All types of asbestos are harmful but exposure to crocidolite considered one of the most hazardous and it may cause early symptoms of Mesothelioma cancer.
Duration of Exposure – Exposure to asbestos for longer duration may cause early symptoms of mesothelioma.
Amount of exposure – Individual working or exposed to large quantity may also experience symptoms soon.
Risk Factors Of Mesothelioma Cancer
Asbestos Exposure – Primary factors of mesothelioma cancer is asbestos exposure.
A person who exposed more to asbestos, the dust of asbestos fibers inhaled, it gets settled in Lungs, stomach or heart can cause irritation that may lead to mesothelioma. The exact mechanism is not understood yet.
Most people who exposed to Asbestos never develop mesothelioma. It means there are other factors which also play the role
Zeolites – It is a mineral chemical which is related to asbestos, which is common in the rock or soil in the part of Turkey. It is also detected in some part of USA ( Arizona, Montana, Nevada)
Radiation – Radiation exposure may lead to mesothelioma. Means, a person has undergone through radiation therapy to treat lymphoma, may have chances to get mesothelioma.
Gender – It has been seen that men are more prone to mesothelioma than women.
Genetics – It has been seen that about 1% of people inherit the mesothelioma from their family. Means there are chances to get mesothelioma from parents to the child. Basically, it occurs because of the mutation in the gene BAP1
There are cases of mesothelioma where there have no risk factors, many people have mesothelioma just because of exposure to asbestos. So take preventive care and protect your self from asbestos fibers for a healthy life.
